Hello, I’m Gabriel. More often than not, you can find me writing about, teaching, or talking about history.  I received my PhD from the University of Iowa in the spring of 2016. During and since the gauntlet of graduate studies, I’ve taught history at the university and high school levels on an increasingly wide range of topics–from ancient Rome to the Viking Age, from the Mongols to the World Wars.

When I’m not teaching, I’m probably writing about something that’s directly or tangentially related to history.  My forthcoming book project explores mass violence in Roman warfare–massacre, mass execution, mass enslavement, and urban destruction–in order to explain how and why Roman armies used these brutal tools of war. Check it out.

Beyond my research niche, I also like writing about military history (in pretty much any period), the relationship between history and our world, and travel, and I’ve become increasingly interested in public-facing scholarship.

When I’m not writing, I’m probably trying new food and exploring new places with my wife, Mandy, who is an amazing nursing professor and all around awesome partner, and our dog, Sisko.
