About

Hello, I’m Gabriel. I’m an ancient history PhD and currently teach high school at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools.

When I’m not teaching, I’m probably writing about something that’s directly or tangentially related to history.  My recent(ish) book explores mass violence in Roman warfare–massacre, mass execution, mass enslavement, and urban destruction–in order to explain how and why Roman armies used these brutal tools of war. Check it out.

Beyond my research niche, I also like writing about military history (in pretty much any period), and I’ve dabbled in some public-facing scholarship.

When I’m not teaching or writing, I’m probably exploring new places with my partner, Mandy, and our dog, Sisko.
