The tomb consisted of a chamber built from five stone slabs--one for each of the walls and one for the roof--and covered with plaster. They feature one of the earliest and best preserved examples of Greek monumental painting. <br /><br />The walls of the tomb depict a symposium, an important social gathering for aristocrats in ancient Greek communities. Participants at symposia would recline together on couches after a meal to enjoy drinking, poetry, music, and conversation. Title A name given to the resource Temple of Athena Description An account of the resource Location: Paestum Date: c. 500 BC Details: This archaic Greek temple was built in the Greek colony of Poseidonia (later called Paestum), which was probably established in southern Italy around 600 BC. The remains are one of the oldest standing structures in Paestum's ruins. It was originally believed to be a temple to the goddess Ceres, but numerous findings of terracottas depicting Athena suggest that the temple was dedicated to her. An interesting feature of the temple is that the outer columns are in the Doric style--i.e. there is no base to the columns and there is limited decoration at the top. However, there were two interior columns (neither of which is standing) in the Ionic style--i.e. they had bases and decorated capitals. Whereas earlier graves had included one or two vases and a few other items--largely typical of western Greek burial practice--many graves in the fourth and third century are more richly stocked and clearly point to Italic influences. Wealthier female graves often contain amber jewelry of Italic origin as well as sets of iron fibulae (brooches). Male tombs, on the other hand, often feature the inclusion of weapons and armor.
